What makes us trust brands?

What makes us trust brands?

There is something strangely similar about the brands we choose to surround ourselves with, even when we cannot quite explain why.

It often starts with a feeling.

A new brand appears, and something just clicks.

I've always wondered whether that click is accidental, or whether it reflects something much deeper about how we make decisions.

Psychology calls one part of it processing fluency.
Our brain's tendency to trust things that are easier to process. A familiar colour palette. A voice that sounds natural. A product that feels instantly understandable. The smoother the experience, the less resistance our mind offers.

But fluency alone isn't enough.

Trust always asks us to accept vulnerability. Every time we buy from a new brand, recommend it to a friend or place an order, we make a small bet. We believe there is something about this brand that makes it worthy of our confidence, even before it has earned it completely.

So what creates that feeling?

I think it's a combination of pattern recognition and subjectivity.

We naturally gravitate towards brands that feel like us.

Brands that speak our language, not just literally, but culturally. Brands that don't imitate familiarity, but embody it.

When I look at some of India's most loved modern brands, I notice the same pattern.

  • Inde Wild reimagined the ritual of champi instead of abandoning it.
  • Gully Labs designs sneakers for Indian streets rather than pretending they don't exist.
  • Subko sources speciality coffee from the Indian subcontinent.
  • Moxie speaks to Indian women in a voice that feels refreshingly honest.

Different industries. Different products. The same instinct.
None of these brands became memorable by trying to look less Indian.

They became memorable because they embraced their context with confidence.

Bold colours. Modern design. Traditional references. Not nostalgia. Not imitation. Just familiarity, interpreted for today.

That is what we aspire to build with Reyaa.

Before Reyaa existed, I was simply another customer looking for silver jewellery that reflected the life I was already living. I wanted pieces that acknowledged where I came from without feeling tied to the past. Jewellery that carried a quiet sense of Indian heritage while belonging just as naturally in cafés, offices, airports and everyday moments.

I couldn't quite find that balance.

So I decided to build it.

Will that make people trust us?

Not immediately.

Trust isn't something a brand can announce into existence.

It is accumulated.

One thoughtful design. One honest conversation. One order packed with care. One promise kept.
Then another. And another.

Perhaps that's why trust has always felt so fascinating to me.

It is deeply subjective, yet it consistently grows from the same foundations.
Familiarity, fluency and the belief that someone genuinely understands you.

If Reyaa can become that familiar feeling for even a few people, we'll know we're building something worth keeping.
