What does a contemporary Indian woman look like?
We've used the phrase modern Indian woman many times. On our website. Across our social media. In conversations about Reyaa. But perhaps it's time we explain what we actually mean by it.
The truth is, a modern Indian woman looks different depending on who you ask.
To an orthodox family, she may represent change. To a patriarch, she may seem like rebellion. To a mother-in-law, she may be measured against tradition. To herself, she may simply be living her life.
What fascinates me is that the same person can hold all of these views at once. A woman going to work is celebrated as modern. The same woman speaking her mind may suddenly become too modern. We seem to admire modernity, but only within boundaries we've already drawn. Perhaps it's time we let go of that idea.
To let a woman define modernity on her own terms, rather than asking her to fit into ours.
That is what we mean when we say Reyaa is made for the modern Indian woman.
Not a particular age.
Not a profession.
Not a city.
Not a lifestyle.
We don't define who our jewellery belongs to.
Instead, we take inspiration from the India she already inhabits. Its streets, its architecture, its colours, its stories and reinterpret them through a contemporary lens.
Because being modern isn't about becoming less Indian. Nor is it about becoming more like someone else.
It's about deciding, for yourself, what that word means. If our pieces become one small way of expressing that, we've done our job.
